Fun Summer Reads for the Family

Today, I have a post at Latter-day Homeschooling with a few reviews of beach reads, perfect for reading while sitting under a shade tree and and sipping fresh lemonade. You can see the post here.

  3. Do you have any idea of "The Help," by Kathryn Stockett is a clean book? I'm a little cautious about anything on the NY Times Best Seller List. It has great reviews but I haven't found anything along the lines of a 'rating' for clean content.

  4. I read The Help for Book Club and posted a review to Goodreads. Here it is:

Kathryn Stockett is a talented writer, no doubt about it.
The Help comes from the perspective of three different women in the South in the 1960's. Stockett does an amazing job keeping each voice unique, interesting, and on-point.

The plot itself is intriguing, although I didn't really get into it until after about a hundred pages.

Miss Skeeter, a journalist, loved the colored maid who raised her...more than her own mother. When the maid goes missing from her life, she starts asking questions about the relationships between colored help and the families they serve.

She risks everything she knows to help the colored community.

The language (as in swearing) bothered me a bit. There was also one particular scene that will keep the book off my deliciously clean list, in which a man is rubbing himself, intending to rape a woman.
